Codrington West FTTP Internet

2020-10-06

Introduction

The village of Codrington was upgraded to FTTP broadband Internet late 2017 under a council lead BDUK finance Openreach upgrade. Most of the village and its outgoing farms were upgraded. However 4 houses to the west of Codrington did not get the upgrade.

Quite a bit of the infrastructure, including new telephone poles and some fibre were installed for these houses, but it was found that an expected underground duct, that takes the telephone cables under the road in front of Greys Cottage did not exist, an armoured telephone cable was there instead.

At the time it was decided that this road could not be dug up due to a section 35 order on it. This was actually erroneous, as the road had not actually been resurfaced just top dressed. Also at the time the road was being used as a relief road for work being done on a bridge on the Bristol north ring road.

Supposedly the council were going to look at doing this as part of their Phase3 broadband upgrade scheme, but nothing has happened on this. So we are looking to get the 4 houses upgraded to FTTP under the Openreach Community scheme financed with the governments Gigabit vouchers.

Work Needed

As stated the village already has FTTP to most houses and it was planned to include these houses and indeed most of the infrastructure including poles and some fibre is already in place. As far as I can see the main work will be to install a duct in the road just in front of Greys cottage for about 75 meters or so. Alternatively the cable could be placed underground in the field behind Greys and Davids cottages, assuming the farmers permission could be obtained.

Also I now understand that Whitehouse BS37 8RQ, one of the houses to the west of Codrington has had FTTP installed from somewhere. As far as I understood this was going to be fed from West of Codrington. I assume it has got its FTTP feed from elsewhere and so if may be able to feed the West of Codrington from that direction as I believe some poles and fibre were already installed in that direction.

Another route that would probably be easier is from "The White House" to the west of Codrington. We understand that The White House was updated to FTTP relatively recently. If this is so there are telegraph poles from there down the road to Tawny Hill cottage and the Nook. From there it should be able to take the FTTP across the road to Greys and hence St. Davids Cottage.
