Codrington Village South Gloucestershire Rural Broadband Internet Campaign
We are campaigning to try and improve the broadband Internet infrastructure in the Codrington area of South Gloucestershire.
Most of the UK is being updated to hybrid-fibre or real-fibre superfast broadband, which has faster uplink and downlink speeds than the current ADSL system used. The rural areas are being left behind. The businesses in the area are at a particular disadvantage but the lack of proper internet service to homes is also an important issues for students, home working and general use.
- Good, reliable, Internet access is now essential for businesses and the home.
- As with many rural locations Codrington has poor Internet access.
- There are around 60 premises which includes around 22 small businesses in the area.
- We have a petition with over 70 signatures asking for our area's Internet infrastructure to be upgraded which has been presented to the council.
- Codrington is 2 miles from a suitable fibre access point with ducting all the way and overhead cabling used to the houses and businesses.
- Government BDUK spending in South Gloucestershire has favored the more urban areas rather than rural areas. Most of the urban areas have been updated but the rural areas have had little development.
- South Gloucestershire Local Council and BT have a chunk of money to spend on updating South Gloucestershire Internet infrastructure.
- The areas that will benefit from this will be decided shortly, we ask to be on this list.
- The BT/Openreach hybrid-fibre FTTC solution is wrong for rural locations. It is a short term solution only and is not future proof as it has limited speed poential. It only provides good access within about 500 metres of the cabinet and does not address the reliability issues. “Upgraded” villages are now seeing the problems with the FTTC solutions provided.
- Pure-fibre, FTTP systems are much more suitable for rural areas and future proofed. The costs are are likely to be similar to FTTC as little underground digging is needed in rural areas due to predominant use of overhead lines in rural locations. WhyFttpForRuralAreas.pdf
- BT's FTTC solution does not match EU guidelines for state aid. The EU Guidelines for state aid state the objective is:
The DAE restates the objective of the EU2020 to bring basic broadband to all Europeans by 2013 and seeks to ensure that, by 2020, (i) all Europeans have access to much higher Internet speeds of above 30 Mbps and (ii) 50 % or more of European households subscribe to Internet connections above 100 Mbps.
!! Codrington due to be updated with FTTP Internet Infrastructure during 2017 !! See news item for more details. |
